Abstract

In recent years, there has been a progressive understanding of the peak sanctuary ritual within a framework of ritual performance. The physical and material aspects of ritual performance involve approaching the peak sanctuary material assemblage, taking into account the active role of objects as participants in the ritual. This paper specifically focuses on the roles of Linear A inscriptions, commonly found on stone vases at peak sanctuaries, in social interactions and their involvement in rituals. Minoan stone vases that bear inscriptions in Linear A, known as libation formulae, provide a unique opportunity to comprehend how inscriptions on votive objects engage and function in ritual actions. Additionally, such objects offer insights into the materiality of writing and literacy in Bronze Age Crete.
